Utthan
Utthan, founded in 1981, works in four drought prone districts of Gujarat with a mission to empower the most vulnerable communities, through a process of building consciousness, and organizing around major issues.
Utthan works with poor and marginalized communities including oppressed castes (Dalits & underprivileged castes), tribals (ethnic groups) and religious minorities (Muslims & Christians). These groups are landless, migrants, daily wage workers or small & marginal farmers. Within these communities, women and youth are the prime focus of work for all programs.
Utthan actively links up with other organizations, networks and movements working on similar and related issues as a part of its strategy, recognizing the value and importance of a collective voice and impact especially in policy advocacy.
The important issues addressed by Utthan are gender inequity and discrimination, communalism, caste bias, poverty and livelihood insecurity, and challenges to democratization.
Utthan has planned the following goals for the upcoming year:
- Sustain and strengthen the growth of grass roots women's movements,
- Secure the right to lead a violence-free life and increase women's access to justice,
- Secure women's economic rights, livelihoods and control over their incomes,
- Improve skills of Utthan team to holistically support the grass roots movement.
