Social Action Forum Against Repression (SAFAR)
Social Action Forum Against Repression (SAFAR) registered in 2002 as a public charitable trust is an emerging women’s group working for gender equality and peace in the state of Gujarat, West India. It was formed after the 2002 Gujarat carnage where there was a strong need to take an unambiguous position on minority women’s (Muslim) rights issues. The goals and mandate of the organization are:
- SAFAR believes in affirmative actions in favor of women.
- SAFAR promotes peace linkages, gender equality and human rights education for peaceful co-existence of individuals.
- SAFAR affirms the ideology of peaceful co-existence with true sense of justice for all sections of society.
- SAFAR is committed to harness, strengthen and empower mainly the women, minorities and other marginalized sections of the society towards their rights through capacity building process.
SAFAR has initiated a community based organization of the survivors of the 2002 carnage. SAFAR works at four levels.
- Direct community based interventions focusing on women,
- Building capacities of middle level women activists and community based organizations who are engaged with the large mass and focus on women,
- Research, documentation & disseminating learning, and
- Advocacy material in local language on contemporary human rights concerns.
