Jan Sahas Social Development Society (JSS)
Since the year 2000 JSS has worked to protect the rights of the marginalized communities in the Dewas region of Madhya Pradesh. JSS focuses on mobilization and empowerment of the Dalit community. JSS follows a people-centered participatory approach and develops community based social structures to work towards the realization of rights and entitlements of the Dalit community.
The goals of JSS are as follows:
- To abolish the caste system,
- To eliminate all kinds of discrimination based on caste, class and gender,
- To organize the Dalit community and other weaker sections of the society,
- To create awareness among the Dalit community and other weaker sections regarding their entitlements,
- To empower the Dalit community and other weaker sections of society.
JSS addresses issues including elimination of the practice of manual scavenging, untouchability, landlessness, education, violence against women.
The two main objectives of JSS for the year 2008-2009 are:
- Establishing Dalit families' rights over land acquired from the government, and
- Addressing atrocities against Dalit families.
