Breakthrough
Breakthrough is an international human rights organization focused on media, education and popular culture. Founded in 1999, Breakthrough uses mass media (including web-based video games), educational workshops, one-to-one contacts and legal challenges.
The use of media, pop culture and new technologies enables Breakthrough to engage new and younger audiences, and extend human rights education and advocacy. It creates innovative partnerships with the entertainment industry, educational institutions, and diverse civil society groups to strengthen democratic values and mobilize support for human rights.
Two of its major campaigns are: The Women's Rights Initiative of the Lawyers Collective, which works against domestic violence; and Is This Justice?, a hard-hitting and hip campaign for community awareness about the marginalization of women in India who suffer from HIV/AIDS. Both campaigns target women, especially Dalit women victims of violence and HIV/AIDS who suffer private and public abuse.
