Greetings! The purpose of this newsletter is to provide information and updates about Youth Ministry Implementation. This newsletter is part of an effort to make the implementation process transparent and accessible to all Unitarian Universalists.

Youth Ministry Working Group

The members of the Youth Ministry Working Group have been confirmed and are preparing for their first meeting in February. The goals for this first meeting are:

  1. Prioritize Objectives and Activities from Summit on Youth Ministry
  2. Begin to develop a plan and timeline for implementation of activities
  3. Begin to clarify YRUU’s (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists) role
  4. Prepare for future meetings and coordinate work outside of meetings

Look for more updates after this meeting in the February Newsletter.

Panel on Theological Education Roundtable on Youth Ministry

One of the objectives developed by the Summit on Youth Ministry was: “Religious professionals and congregations will have the vision, skills, and resources for transformative youth ministry.” Ordained ministers with strong commitment to and competency in youth ministry are absolutely crucial to achieving this objective. At the Panel on Theological Education Roundtable on Youth Ministry representatives from Theological Schools, the Ministerial Fellowship Committee, the UU Minister’s Association, Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Ministry and Professional Leadership, the Panel on Theological Education, Seminarians, and Youth will gather to address the following questions:

  1. What role can ordained clergy have in ministry with youth?
  2. What are the current youth ministry competency requirements and expectations for ordained clergy? What resources are currently available form various sources for the development of these competencies?
  3. What youth ministry competency requirements and expectations should we have for ordained clergy?
  4. What resources and opportunities do seminarians and ordained clergy need in order to meet these expectations and requirements?

This meeting will take place March 5-8 in Newton, MA. Look for a full report on the Roundtable in the beginning of April.

This re-imagining will be founded in the Summit on Youth Ministry and an evaluation of the current Chrysalis Training program, with the goal of creating a detailed plan of suggestions to bring to the Youth Ministry Working Group and the Office of Youth Ministries for next steps.
