The Consultation on Ministry to and with Youth July 2007 Newsletter

Greetings!  The purpose of this newsletter is to provide information and updates about the Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth.  This newsletter is part of an effort to make the consultation process transparent and accessible to all Unitarian Universalists.

Reports! Reports!

Over the past year, members of the Task Force on Youth Ministry have facilitated conversations with over 40 districts and stakeholder groups.  Thank you to everyone who participated!  Visit the Consultation website for reports from these large and lively gatherings of youth and adults.

Summit On Youth Ministry

The Summit on Youth Ministry is quickly approaching!  The event, which will bring together 60 youth and adults from stakeholder groups throughout the Association, will happen July 16th-20th in Boston, MA.  A list of attendees is now posted on the Consultation website.  You can also visit the Summit page on our website to find a complete report (PDF) of the Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth, summarized into six theme areas that the Summit participants will focus on.

Youth Ministry at General Assembly

Youth ministry was a BIG DEAL at this year’s Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly (GA)!  Over 5,000 Unitarian Universalists, including over 300 youth, gathered from June 20 to 24 in Portland, OR.

  • Youth ministry and intergenerational community were named as priorities by participants in Open Space Technology.
  • Our booth in the exhibit hall generated conversation and provided information about every stage of the process.
  • On Friday of GA, members of the Task Force held a workshop on “Dynamic Youth Ministry” and led a prayer during the evening plenary session
  • Speakers at the Bridging Ceremony honoring youth moving into young adulthood spoke passionately about the importance of youth and young adult ministry
  • Every workshop slot offered at least one youth or youth ministry-related program.  Youth were actively involved in every part of General Assembly, and had a strong voice in the plenary sessions.

There were many opportunities for GA attendees to take the youth ministry excitement home to their congregations.

District Gatherings Bring Together Youth and Adults

From November 2006 through May 2007, every UUA district held a gathering on youth ministry.  Youth and adults from throughout each district came together to share their experiences and hopes for youth ministry.  If you weren’t able to attend, you can read your district’s reports online.  Thank you to all of the participants as well as the organizers and facilitators who made these events successful!

Stay tuned for an exciting August newsletter after the Summit on Youth Ministry!
