Rev. Greg Stewart

The Reverend Greg Stewart is the senior minister at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco. Before arriving in the bay area, Greg ministered with congregations at Reno, NV (where he wrote a regular column for the Reno Gazette-Journal); Grand Rapids, MI (where he was a featured preacher on the television show Voice of the Liberal); Pasadena, CA; Cleveland, OH; and Chicago, IL. His ministry in the Midwest was the subject of a feature article in the UU World, April/May 1996. A published writer, his essay, “Activist Youth Groups: We’re On a Mission,” appeared in the quarterly journal, Liberal Religious Education. He also authored the chapter, “Sunday School is Dead—Long Live Sunday School,” in the book, Essex Conversations: Visions for Lifespan Religious Education, and wrote the adult education curriculum Womanspirit: Women’s Spirituality in Developing Countries, published by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee. Greg is best known as the designer and author of the critically acclaimed intergenerational program, Way Cool Sunday School, an outside-of-the-box, experientially-based liberal religious education program.

Greg earned graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. His undergraduate degree was awarded by the University of Illinois. Greg’s activism recently landed him in jail for committing civil disobedience after the state of California rescinded the marriage rights of its gay and Lesbian citizens. He and his partner of twenty-eight years, Stillman Stewart, were married while it was still legal, just before the 2008 presidential election. They share their home with five boys and any number of rescued pets.
