The Reverend Dr. Carolyn Owen-Towle

Carolyn Owen-Towle has been the co-minister of First Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church of San Diego with husband, Tom Owen-Towle since 1978. She has been involved extensively in denominational leadership, including serving on the Affirmative Action for Women in Ministry Committee, the “Fulfilling the Promise” committee, and chairing the Rochester General Assembly Focus Group. She was President of the UU Ministerial Sisterhood, Settlement Consultant for Department. of Ministry at the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), President of the UU Service Committee (UUSC), and a candidate for President of the UUA. In 1994, she delivered the sermon at the Service of the Living Tradition.

Carolyn has served on boards and committees in her community, as well, including Planned Parenthood, the Hospice Clergy Advisory Committee, the Hunger Advisory Committee for Congressman Jim Bates, the Human Rights Advisory Committee in San Diego County, the San Diego Ecumencial Conference AIDS Chaplaincy Task Force, the Catfish Club and the United African American Ministers’ Action Council. She has won the Pacific Southwest District (PSWD) Award for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Unitarian Universalism, as well as Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in America.

Carolyn was born and raised in Southern California and has been a UU since 1966. She is the mother of four grown children: Christopher, Jennifer, Russell, and Erin, and the grandmother of three.
