Mary Bonner Memorial Internship for Peacemaking
The Mary Bonner Memorial Internship for Peacemaking was created by a generous contribution by Robert Bonner in memory of his late wife. The Bonners were and Robert continues to be an active member of All Souls Church, Unitarian in Washington, DC, and strong advocates for peace.Primary Purpose: The Program Associate for Peacemaking is responsible for supporting Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregational participation in the 2006-2010 Study/Action Issue, Peacemaking, using All Souls Church, Unitarian, in Washington, DC, as the lead congregation for activities and new resources and especially engaging Washington area congregations.
Principal Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the volunteer peacemaking implementation committee,
coordinates appropriate resources for UU congregations and districts to use in
an ongoing process of study, action and reflection about peacemaking, including
by sharing best practices and creating new materials as needed.
- Supports congregations, especially by phone and email, in effectively using the
resources to create meaningful dialogue and articulate common moral principles
among people with divergent opinions about war, peace, and related
issues.
- Works with congregations to encourage grassroots campaigns,
which help them to act on religious values related to peace.
- Facilitates communication among congregations, groups, and individuals working
on these issues.
- Works with the Commission on Social Witness to
publicize the Peacemaking Study Action Issue and available resources.
- Represents the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) in grassroots campaign coalitions related to peacemaking, in
conjunction with Legislative Assistant for International Issues and other UUA
staff.
- Works specifically with All Souls Church—Washington, DC, on these issues, using ASC as the first test for materials, a sounding board for
programs, and a national flagship congregation in a strong position to take the
lead on these issues. This part of the work will evolve and might involve such
tasks as: coordinating national presence at national gatherings related to war,
holding a national conference on War and Peace, creating War and Peace covenant
groups, workshops, or ongoing classes for members of all ages, creating a
worship service related to peace, and/or other initiatives supported by members
of ASC. This work, involving ASC and other Washington area congregations, will
be about 30% of the job, and will be done in close coordination with Louise
Green, minister of social justice at All Souls Church.
- Other duties as required by supervisor, Director of Washington Office for Advocacy, Director of
Advocacy and Witness, Executive Vice President, and President.
- Strives to apply the principles of anti-racism and anti-oppression, including practicing accountability, in all of the responsibilities above.
